Setting
Frontenac State Park spans 2,270 acres along Lake Pepin, a Mississippi River widening about 10 miles southeast of Red Wing. A 430-foot limestone bluff defines the 3-mile shoreline, featuring In-Yan-Teopa, a natural limestone arch with a Dakota name. Mixed hardwood forest blankets the bluff; bottomland cottonwood and willow line Wells Creek, which creates Sand Point, a sand spit into the lake. The park's 58 campsites anchor recreation alongside 13 miles of hiking trails, fishing, and swimming at Sand Point. Birdwatchers find 260 documented species along the Mississippi Flyway. The historic town of Frontenac, once a 19th-century resort, sits entirely within park boundaries.
