Setting
Buffalo River State Park spans 1,068 acres on relatively flat prairie dotted with sandy beach ridges where the Buffalo River has carved striking 30-foot cut banks. Native grasslands of big and little bluestem blend with a wooded gallery forest of elm, ash, cottonwood, and oak along the river corridor. The park provides 44 campground sites with electric hookups, bathhouse, and shower facilities, plus 12 miles of trails including 6 miles groomed for cross-country skiing. Located near Fargo-Moorhead and along the Pine to Prairie Birding route, the park attracts visitors observing greater prairie chickens during their spring mating displays from March through April.
