Setting
Leech Lake Recreation Area is set in a mixed hardwood and pine forest on the Leech Lake River inside Chippewa National Forest. The facility offers 73 wooded sites with electric hookups (including eight full-hookup sites) and four primitive walk-to tent sites. Amenities include flush toilets, showers, laundry facilities, a dump station, playgrounds, sports courts, boat ramps, and overnight mooring slips. Campers come for boat access to Portage Bay to fish for walleye, perch, and musky, or to hike the nearby North Country National Scenic Trail.
Getting there: From Grand Rapids, Minnesota, take Highway 2 west for 33 miles to Bena. Turn south onto County Road 8 and proceed 8 miles to Federal Dam. From Bemidji, Minnesota, take Highway 2 east for 35 miles to Bena, Turn south onto County Road 8 and proceed 8 miles to Federal Dam.
