Savanna Portage State Park encompasses 15,200 acres straddling the continental divide, with the East Savanna River draining toward Lake Superior and the West Savanna River toward the Mississippi. The low-relief landscape features rolling hills, extensive peat bogs and marshes with black spruce, tamarack, and white cedar, plus mixed hardwood and conifer uplands. Two lakes—Loon and Wolf—support boating and fishing. The park's defining feature is a historic 6-mile portage trail that for centuries connected Great Lakes commerce to Mississippi River trade. Recreation includes camping, hiking, swimming, canoeing, and winter activities on established trails. Wildlife includes moose, bears, and wolves.
