Setting
North Richey Cove Campground offers eight reservable, shaded, and grassy campsites along the shore of the 3,310-acre Council Grove Lake in eastern Kansas's rolling Flint Hills. Created by a 1964 dam, the lake features an on-site boat ramp with popular fishing for crappie, catfish, and stocked saugeye, alongside nearly 2,700 surrounding acres of public hunting land. On-site trails like the Pioneer Nature Trail wind through the forest and along the water. The campground connects to the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway and sits two miles from historic Council Grove, where Osage leaders signed the 1825 Santa Fe Trail treaty.
Getting there: From I-70, take Highway 177 south for 30 miles. Richey Cove entrance is located on the west side of the highway at the dam road.
- Limited separation from through roads or other sites here, an 8-site campground with the nearest through road 0.1 miles off.
- Open country, with nothing named rising within 30 miles.
- 8 on the water, with most of them shaded.
