Setting
Situated on a high hill at the east end of Council Grove Dam, this park overlooks Council Grove Lake with open grassy areas framed by large cottonwood and oak trees. Facilities include five primitive tent sites, masonry vault toilets, a shared water hydrant, and a day-use picnic pavilion with six tables. Due to steep, rocky bluffs surrounding the hilltop, direct water access is limited at the site, though boat launches, swimming areas, and the historic town of Council Grove are located a short drive away around the reservoir.
Getting there: 1 mile north of Council Grove, Kansas on Highway 177. Then west 200 yards on Lake Road (goes across dam).
- Little separation from through roads or other sites here, a 4-site campground with the nearest through road 0.1 miles off.
- The Council Grove Lake shoreline is 0.2 mi off.
- Estimated night sky: Bortle 4, a rural sky with a glow on the horizon.
- Open country, with nothing named rising within 30 miles.
- Mostly tent-only sites, with most of them shaded.
