Designated sites only

U.S. Forest Service allows overnight stays only at the designated sites here.

Sitting at 6,031 feet on Little Guard Peak, this historic 14x14 two-story fire lookout overlooks the Bitterroot Mountains and the North Fork Coeur d'Alene River. The facility sleeps four using one single bed upstairs and three fold-up cots downstairs. The ground-floor kitchen has a propane stove, small propane refrigerator, table, and cookware, while an outdoor pit toilet is within 200 feet. Guests must bring drinking water, bedding, trash bags, and propane for the upstairs heater and lanterns. The Shoshone Ridge Trail #81 starts right at the site.

The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.

Private here -- the nearest through road is 1.4 miles off, a single-site campground. Cabins and shelters rather than pads. The nearest town, Kellogg, is 19 mi off.

September normals 4059°F, 1.8″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
