Built in 1956, Bald Mountain Lookout sits on a 50-foot tower atop a 5,334-foot peak in the Hoodoo Mountain Range, heavily forested with larch, cedar, white pine, and Douglas fir. The cabin accommodates four people with a futon, two cots, a table, four chairs, cookware, dishes, and a propane stove and heater. An exterior catwalk surrounds the cabin, and a pit toilet sits below. The site has no water, electricity, or refrigerator. The 4-mile Strychnine Ridge Trail originates southwest of the tower, connecting to the 8.9-mile Beason Meadows Trail leading to Giant White Pine Campground.
Road difficulty 4 of 5 -- a difficult drive in. Recorded as maintained only for high-clearance vehicles, dirt, pitching to 16%, 100% of it on a shelf. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
Cabins and shelters rather than pads -- most of them shaded. The nearest town, St. Maries, is 20 mi off.
