Setting
Built by the CCC in 1938 as a fire lookout residence, Bishop Mountain Cabin sits at 7,800 feet near a historic lookout tower on the western rim of the Henry's Fork Caldera. The one-room pine-surrounded cabin sleeps four on bunk beds with mattress pads. Amenities include a wood cook stove, table, chairs, outdoor vault toilet, and provided firewood, though there is no running water or electricity. Nearby logging roads provide mountain biking, while surrounding trails accommodate hiking, snowmobiling, and horseback riding. Harriman State Park sits 14 miles east.
Getting there: From Ashton, ID, travel north on Highway 20 for 16 miles, then turn left (west) on North Antelope Flat Road (#168). Travel 7.5 miles to Bishop Mountain Road (#120) and then turn right (north) and travel for about 5.4 miles. The road dead ends at the cabin.
- Moderately separated here.
- Cabins and shelters rather than pads, with most of them shaded.
