Setting
Blue Mountain Campground sits at 8,200 feet on a hill covered in scattered ponderosa pines, a half-mile south of the South Platte River and Eleven Mile Canyon. The single loop contains over 20 widely spaced campsites equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, dirt and gravel aprons for up to two vehicles, vault toilets, and a water pump. Campers come for direct access to the 1-mile Hard Rock Interpretive Trail overview, river trout fishing, mountain biking, and rock climbing in the canyon, with Florissant Fossil Beds nearby.
Getting there: From Lake George, Colorado, turn off of Highway 24 onto County Road 96. Follow the road for about a 1 1/2 miles towards Eleven Mile Canyon. The campground is just up the way on the right hand side just past the entrance of Eleven Mile Canyon on County Road 61.
- Limited separation from through roads or other sites here, a 21-site campground with the nearest through road 0.5 miles off.
- Most of them shaded.
- Blue Mountain stands 1,150 ft above the map pin, 2.1 miles south.
- A river runs 0.6 mi off.
- Estimated night sky: Bortle 2, true dark-sky territory.
