Setting
Amphitheater Campground perches on a mountainside at 8,400 feet, directly above the town of Ouray. Set in a forest of Gambel oak and mixed conifers, the campground overlooks massive gray volcanic and glacial cliffs. The facility offers single-family campsites—including tent-only options—equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection. Hikers can head right onto the Upper Cascade Falls, Baby Bath Tubs, and Chief Ouray Mine trails from the on-site trailhead, while off-road vehicle trails branch out into the surrounding mountains.
Getting there: From Ouray, travel approximately 2 miles south on Highway 550. Watch for the campground sign and turnoff road to the left.
- Little separation from through roads or other sites here, a 35-site campground with the nearest through road 0.1 miles off.
- Flat ground is scarce: under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
- Cascade Mountain stands 3,648 ft above the map pin, 1.5 miles northeast.
- Cascade Creek runs 0.3 mi off.
- Estimated night sky: Bortle 3, a dark rural sky.
