Setting
Perched on the South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park among scrub oak forests, this campground sits directly above the sheer, narrow gorge carved by the Gunnison River. The facility offers year-round sites, with Loop B providing electric hookups; drinking water is available seasonally from mid-May through mid-October. On-site facilities include an amphitheater for summer evening talks. Hikers can access the Oak Flat Loop and Rim Rock Trails directly, with cross-country skiing on South Rim Drive in winter. The Cimarron Canyon Rail Exhibit sits nearby downstream.
Getting there: The park is located approximately 250 miles (402 km) southwest of Denver. The South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is 15 miles (24 km) east of Montrose, CO, via U.S. Hwy 50 and CO Hwy 347.
