Bordered by oak, sycamore, and evergreen brush along Matilija Creek, Wheeler Gorge Campground sits in Los Padres National Forest. Originally built by Boy Scouts nearly a century ago, the site features paved RV spurs up to 35 feet, picnic tables, fire rings with grills, and accessible vault toilets. Drinking water is not provided, and visitors must carry out their own trash. The short Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail starts at the upper end of the loop, and ranger-led educational tours run at the adjacent visitor center. A small creek swimming hole sits near the highway.
