Circle X Ranch Group Campground in CA
National Park Service allows overnight stays only at the designated sites here.
Circle X Ranch Group Campground is a former Boy Scout camp set in the canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area below Sandstone Peak. The facility features a ranger contact station that provides hiking maps for the surrounding area. Trails lead from the site through coastal sage scrub and chaparral down to the West Fork of Arroyo Sequit at the Grotto, as well as up toward high mountain overlooks with views extending to the Channel Islands.
The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad. Overhead clearance here is posted at 12 ft -- the tightest site sets the limit. Flat ground is scarce -- under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
Boney Peak stands 1,128 ft above the site, 0.5 miles north. Exposed here -- the nearest through road is 0.1 miles off, a single-site campground. Night skies measure Bortle 4 -- a rural sky with a glow on the horizon. A group campground -- most of them shaded. The Grotto lies 0.8 mi off. The nearest town, Lake Sherwood, is 3.7 mi off.
September normals 60–84°F, 0.1″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
Set by National Park Service. Stage 1 and 2 orders change within days -- check the current order before you build a fire.
