John L. Whitehead Jr. Campground is located within Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park near Earlimart in the flat San Joaquin Valley, 30 miles north of Bakersfield. The park preserves Allensworth, California's only town founded, financed, and governed by African Americans, established in 1908 by Lt. Colonel Allen Allensworth. The 15-site year-round campground accommodates RVs up to 45 feet and tents, with two sites offering full hookups. Facilities include picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station. The historic site features nine restored buildings including a schoolhouse, hotel, general store, and library documenting this significant settlement.
