Setting
Nordheimer Group Sites sit in a shaded Douglas-fir forest along the California Salmon River near the Marble Mountain Wilderness. The facility features four group sites accommodating up to 50 people each, complete with picnic tables, fire rings with grills, and vault restrooms. Sites A, B, and C are set in grassy meadows, while Site D overlooks the river with foot access for swimmers and boaters. A 4x4 boat trailer access route leads to the river edge, and individual first-come, first-served campsites are available in the main loop.
Getting there: From California State Highway 96, turn onto Salmon River Road/Forest Highway 93 and continue about 13 miles to the campground. The first 7 miles are a narrow winding two lane road. At Butler Creek, the second half of this route narrows further to one lane with tight corners and sheer cliffs high above the river. Fallen rocks on the roadway are common. Long trailers, RVs, and large trucks are discouraged. There is no cellular service near this remote area.
- Limited separation from through roads or other sites here, a 4-site campground with the nearest through road 0.1 miles off.
- Sauerkraut Peak stands 3,944 ft above the map pin, 1.9 miles northeast.
- Salmon River runs 0.1 mi off.
- A group campground, with 3 on the water and most of them shaded.
