Sitting at 6,400 feet in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area of Plumas National Forest, Gold Lake 4x4 Campground offers high-elevation camping reachable only by a rough, boulder-strewn OHV road or by boat from across Gold Lake. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and bear-resistant food locker. There are no hookups, no water, no trash pickup, and no restrooms on site; campers must pack out all garbage and solid human waste. An OHV road continues into adjacent forest land, and the lake offers access for water sports and fishing.

The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad.

The Gold Lake shoreline is 0.1 mi off. Exposed here -- the nearest through road is 0.1 miles off, a 14-site campground. 1 hike-in site -- 9 sit on the water, most of them shaded. Mount Elwell stands 1,367 ft above the site, 3.1 miles northwest. The nearest town, Portola, is 15 mi off.

September normals 4973°F, 0.8″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
