Setting
Carlton Campground stretches along the North Yuba River right off Highway 49, 13 miles from Downieville in the Tahoe National Forest. The terrain is shaded by stands of cedar, ponderosa pine, and oak. Single-family sites accommodate both tents and trailers, each outfitted with a picnic table and campfire ring. Facilities on site include vault toilets and drinking water. Visitors use the location for river wading, swimming, rainbow trout fishing, and seasonal kayaking and rafting. The nearby Rocky Rest trailhead grants access to the North Yuba River Trail and surrounding OHV and hiking routes.
Getting there: From Downieville, travel south on Highway 49 for just over 13 miles. The campground is on the left side of the highway. From Nevada City, travel north on Highway 49 for just under 30 miles. The campground is on the right side of the highway.
