Why
U.S. Forest Service opens most of its land to dispersed camping unless a local order restricts it. Check the unit's current orders before you commit.All 6.8 miles in are maintained only for high-clearance vehicles, mostly gravel with 2.5 miles of dirt. Climbs 1,000 ft over 6.8 miles through 12 switchbacks, with sustained grades near 16% and pitches to 31%. Stretches run along a shelf with a drop of up to ~160 ft on the downhill side. Few of the stretches measured have level ground to pull onto. Dead-end road with no mapped turnaround, so expect to back out or unhitch.
Knob Peak stands 1,084 ft above the site, 1.6 miles west. Private here, with the nearest through road 1.8 miles off. Philpot Lake lies 1.1 mi off. Travellers have camped along here.
Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Yolla Bolla Ranger District: The order prohibits camping outside of a Developed Recreation Site for longer than 7 days in designated areas and longer than 15 days within any 30-day period in the remaining areas on the Forest. It also prohibits camping for more than 30 cumulative days in any 12-month period.
