El Capitán State Beach spans 2,634 acres along the Gaviota Coast west of Santa Barbara, featuring 131 campsites including six RV-only sites and five group areas set among sycamore and oak trees. The campground provides direct beach access with tide pools and sandy shores. The site is a significant fall and winter habitat for migrating Monarch butterflies. California State Parks acquired the land between 1953 and 1967; the park is named for José Francisco Ortega, a Spanish Army officer who received a land grant in the area.
