Setting
Morro Bay State Park sprawls across San Luis Obispo County on California's Central Coast, anchored by a shallow lagoon ringed with saltwater and brackish marshes supporting abundant bird populations. Two volcanic peaks—Black Hill and Cerro Cabrillo from the Nine Sisters chain—rise within the park, forested with Monterey pines on Black Hill. Established in 1934 on ancestral Millingstone Horizon Chumash lands, the park offers a marina, public golf course, museum of natural history, and offshore marine protected areas preserving coastal ecosystems. Recreation includes sailing, fishing, hiking through forests and past volcanic geology, and bird watching across diverse habitats.
