American Canyon is a remote hunting camp bordered by the Machesna Wilderness, set in a grove of mature oak trees, open grasslands, and chaparral. Motorized access requires driving through private cattle ranch land during deer hunting season. The campground offers 12 sites for tent and car camping; RVs are restricted by size. Each site has a picnic table and a combination fire ring/grill. Amenities consist of two pit toilet outhouses. There is no trash service and no drinking or non-potable water, as the local watershed remains dry during hunting season.

The road in has not been measured -- unknown, not bad. Overhead clearance here is posted at 14 ft -- the tightest site sets the limit.

Salinas River runs 0.1 mi off. Garcia Mountain stands 1,620 ft above the site, 1.9 miles southwest. Private here -- the nearest through road is 1.8 miles off, a 12-site campground. Most of them shaded. The nearest town, Los Ranchos, is 19 mi off.

September normals 5090°F, 0.1″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
