Observatory Campground rests at 4,800 feet in the pine and oak forests of the Palomar Mountains, just two miles from Caltech's Palomar Observatory. Arranged around a single large loop, the sites accommodate RVs up to 32 feet with campfire rings, grills, and picnic tables; select sites feature level cement pads designed for telescope setups. Amenities include drinking water, trash cans, vault toilets, and seasonal flush toilets and coin-operated showers. Guests can hike the 2.25-mile trail to the observatory, explore nearby Palomar Mountain State Park, or utilize the mountain biking and hiking trails.

All 0.5 miles in are fully maintained. Paved the whole way in (0.5 miles). Overhead clearance here is posted at 12 ft -- the tightest site sets the limit.

A body of water lies 0.3 mi off. Exposed here -- the nearest through road is 0.1 miles off, a 28-site campground. Most of them shaded. Night skies measure Bortle 3 -- a dark rural sky. High Point stands 1,273 ft above the site, 2.9 miles northeast. The nearest town, Valley Center, is 11 mi off.

September normals 5381°F, 0.5″ rain. Monthly averages, PRISM 1991–2020.
