Campground details
Setting
Black Mountain Group Campground sits at 7,500 feet in the San Bernardino National Forest, surrounded by wilderness and heavy pine forest. The site features a single tent-only area for up to 100 people, complete with campfire circles, grills, picnic tables, and vault toilets. No drinking water is on site, though spring water is located two miles down the road. Hikers step directly onto the Fuller Ridge Trail, a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail that climbs high timbered ridges toward San Jacinto Peak. San Bernardino sits 50 miles northwest, while the small town of Idyllwild lies 16 miles south.
Getting there: From Idyllwild, California, travel north on Highway 243 about 9 miles. Take a sharp right turn onto Black Mountain Trail/Forest Route 4S01 and continue just over 2 miles. Forest Route 4S01 turns slightly left and becomes Black Mountain Truck Trail, which leads to the campground.
