Setting
Running Deer Campground sits at 5,000 feet elevation on the eastern shore of the 1,615-acre Little Grass Valley Reservoir, surrounded by pine and fir in the Northern Sierra Nevada. Designed for tents and RVs without hookups, the campground features paved parking spurs, tables, fire rings with grills, flush toilets, drinking water, trash bins, and an on-site boat ramp. Visitors use the lake for swimming, water skiing, and fishing for trout and kokanee salmon, or access the 14.5-mile Lakeshore Trail, which connects to the Pacific Crest Trail.
Getting there: From Oroville, California, travel east on Highway 162 to Olive Highway. Turn right and continue 5 miles to Forbestown Road. Turn right and go 16 miles to La Porte Road. Turn left and travel 27 miles to La Porte, then 2 miles to signs for the recreation area. Turn right and continue just over 2 miles to the campground.
