Setting

Fairly secluded

Escondido Campground sits in a grassy meadow surrounded by sandstone formations, oaks, ponderosa pines, madrones, and sycamores in the Santa Lucia Mountains of Los Padres National Forest. The nearby Arroyo Seco River flows through the canyon terrain. The site offers nine year-round campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, alongside two vault toilets and hitching posts at the trailhead. There is no potable water or dump station. Trailheads near the sites provide access for hiking, biking, backpacking, and horseback riding, with the historic San Antonio Mission a short drive away.

Getting there: Take Highway 101 to Jolon Road, turn onto Mission Road, to Del Venture Road. Travel 12 miles to the campground. Last 3 miles is unsurfaced.

  • Well separated here, a 9-site campground with the nearest through road 2.2 miles off.
  • Flat ground is scarce: under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
  • Junipero Serra Peak stands 3,667 ft above the map pin, 4.1 miles east.
  • Mostly tent-only sites.
