Setting
New Shady Rest Campground sits under a mature Jeffrey pine canopy at 7,800 feet in the eastern Sierra Nevada, adjacent to the town of Mammoth Lakes. The facility is split into two large loops accommodating both tents and RVs. Amenities include flush toilets, campfire rings, picnic tables, and bear-proof food storage lockers. Showers are not on-site but are nearby. A paved trail links to a town park, skate park, playing field, and visitor center. Nearby regional destinations include Yosemite National Park, Mono Basin, Devils Postpile National Monument, and local trout fishing waters.
Getting there: New Shady Rest is near Mammoth Lakes, California, 300 miles north of Los Angeles and 165 miles south of Reno, Nevada. Take U.S. Highway 395 to State Route 203. Proceed west on 203 for 2.8 miles to Old Sawmill Road. Take a right, go 0.1 mile, and turn right into the campground.
