Campground details
Setting
Lightning Point Group Campground sits at 6,100 feet in the Angeles National Forest, set among Jeffrey pine, scrub oak, and manzanita. The facility holds six group campsites for up to 240 people. Two sites feature six horse corrals each for equestrian camping. All sites include group-sized tables, large gathering spaces, and a short nature trail. There are no toilets or drinking water on site; visitors must pack in portable toilets and all water. The Pacific Crest Trail runs nearby, and Angeles Crest Highway provides scenic access 25 miles southeast of Palmdale.
Getting there: From Interstate 210 in La Canada, exit onto the Angeles Crest Highway (HWY 2) and drive northeast for approximately 10 miles to the intersection of the Angeles Crest Highway and the Angeles Forest Highway (County Road N3). Turn left (north) on to the Angeles Forest Highway and drive approximately 12 miles to the Santa Clara Divide Road at Mill Creek Summit. Turn left (west) onto the Santa Clara Divide and continue for about 11 miles to the campground.
- Well separated here, a 6-site campground with the nearest through road 1.8 miles off.
- Flat ground is scarce: under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
- Deer Spring lies 0.2 mi off.
- Estimated night sky: Bortle 4, a rural sky with a glow on the horizon.
- A group campground, with most of them shaded.
