Setting

Limited privacy

Whitney Portal Campground sits in a pine forest at 8,000 feet at the base of Mt. Whitney in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. The facility lies along Whitney Creek and features tent-only sites, standard RV/tent sites, and three group areas, all serviced by paved roads, vault toilets, and drinking water. Due to frequent black bear activity, every site includes a mandatory metal bear-proof food locker. A convenience store with showers and trailheads for Mt. Whitney, Meysan Lake, and the John Muir Wilderness sit half a mile away.

Getting there: From U.S. Highway 395 in California, travel to the town of Lone Pine. The campground is 13 miles west of Lone Pine on Whitney Portal Road.
