Setting
Located nine miles west of Big Pine, Upper Sage Campground stretches along Big Pine Creek inside a narrow canyon shaded by Jeffrey pines and cottonwoods. Paved parking aprons reach up to 40 feet long. Facilities include picnic tables, campfire rings, drinking water, and flush toilets. Big Pine Creek is stocked annually with trout for stream fishing, while the 1.5-mile Big Pine Creek Trail starts nearby, connecting campers to backcountry routes in the John Muir Wilderness.
Getting there: In Big Pine, on US Highway 395, turn west at the yellow flashing traffic light onto Crocker Street (Big Canyon Road). Continue on this road for 9 miles to campground, on your left.
