Humboldt Lagoons State Park protects 2,256 acres along California's Redwood Coast between Trinidad and Orick. Three lagoons—Big, Stone, and Freshwater—form shallow bays separated from the ocean by sandy bars created by coastal wave action. Bordered by rocky headlands, the park's estuaries and wetlands provide critical resting habitat for migratory waterfowl on the Pacific Flyway. Established in 1931, the preserve sits adjacent to US Route 101, encompassing diverse ecosystems from saltwater marshes to Sitka Spruce forests shaped by tectonic activity and sea level fluctuations.
