Setting
Robbs Hut sits at 6,686 feet atop Robbs Peak in the Eldorado National Forest, surrounded by Jeffrey and ponderosa pines. Originally built in 1934 as ranger sleeping quarters for the adjacent look-out tower, the rustic cabin features three sleeping platforms with mattresses, wool blankets, a propane heater, a propane cookstove, and solar lighting. The outdoor stone deck includes a campfire ring, picnic table, charcoal grill, and vault toilet. The site has no drinking water, electricity, or trash service. Visitors come for surrounding hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing trails.
Getting there: From Placerville, drive 21 miles east on Highway 50, turn left on Ice House Road and go 23 miles north to the Robbs Hut Road turnoff. Look for small sign and turn left on dirt road. In winter, park here and ski or hike 3 miles along the road to the hut. In summer, use combination to access both gates and drive up. Follow blue arrows to the hut.
- Well separated here, a single-site campground with the nearest through road 0.9 miles off.
- Flat ground is scarce: under a tenth of the terrain within a few hundred yards is level.
- Cabins and shelters rather than pads.
