Setting
Houston Shelter is a walk-up day-use group picnic site located on the shore of Lake Lewis Smith in Bankhead National Forest. The facility provides picnic tables, grills, drinking water, and flush toilets, with a boat ramp, showers, and a sandy swimming beach situated nearby. The surrounding 21,200-acre lake features clear waters framed by high rock bluffs, providing access for bass fishing and motorized boating. Nearby footpaths include the High Rock Loop and Fox Run Loop trails.
Getting there: About 50 miles southwest of Decatur, take Highway 278 east from Double Springs for 8 miles. Turn south on County Road 63 and continue for 4 miles. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 118 and travel a mile to the campground.
